West Coast Swing Workshops

Gregory Scott and Lemery Rollins are the 2012 NASDE tour champions and are leading the tour this year too. Together they have over 30 years of dancing experience combined. Greg began his dance life in Amerian Ballroom and competed in country, winning many titles. He has also danced ballet, jazz, and hip hop. Lemery began her dance life in International 10 Dance (waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, tango, Viennese waltz, rumba, samba, paso dobles, cha cha, and jive) and won awards; she is also proficient in American ballroom and salsa.

Greg and Lemery now focus on west coast swing. Together they have established themselves as top competitors in the Showcase division (like classic, but with the addition of any and all lifts and drops). They are the 2012 NASDE Tour Champions and each is leading their sex in the 2013 NASDE Tour. In 2012 alone, they won the Showcase division at the America's Classic, Summer Hummer, Dallas Dance, and the Tampa Bay Classic.

Individually they have each won numerous awards for improvised performances in champion level strictly swing and Jack & Jill contests. They are the premier full time dance instructors in the talent rich Washington DC area. They are an integral part of DC's amazing social swing dance community (perhaps the best in the USA).

The DanceGourmet workshops have been designed to help social dancers learn and understand the more advanced concepts of West Coast Swing. Proficiency at west coast swing social dancing basics is the only pre-requisite. Greg and Lemery believe that a strong foundation leads to a higher obtainable level and look forward to sharing their love of dance with you.

3:15 - 4:15 Forming (and Strengthening) a Solid Foundation
Intended to improve the dancer from an individual perspective, this workshop incorporates concepts such as walks, triples, body movement, turns, and effective weight transfers. This workshop will improve you as a dancer regardless of the dance form.

4:30 - 5:30 Communicating through Connection
Dancing with your centers, which are moved by your hips. We will cover how to create connection, maintain it, manipulate it, and yes, play with it.

5:45 - 6:45 Creating Conversations through Movement
Creating movement in relation to each other. This workshop is intended to get you on the path of dancing from shape to shape rather than pattern to pattern. You will learn how to influence the direction of the dance much like you would influence the direction and flow of a conversation.

6:45 - 7:45 Five Course Gourmet Dinner
Romaine Salad with Cherry Tomatoes and Spanish Almonds, Acorn Squash, Pear, and Adzuki Soup with Sauteed Shiitakes, Corn Chowder with Basil, Tomato, and Fennel, Beef Bourguignon with Egg Noodles and French Baguettes, Lavender Infused Jasmine Rice Pudding.

7:45 - 8:45 Linking Shapes (or Patterns)
In this workshop we will use your input to create new and exciting shape transitions. We will illustrate how to link seamlessly in the moment (sometimes called "choreography on the fly").
